Diabetic Education/DOTS

El Campo Memorial Hospital Becomes an AADE-accredited Diabetes Education Program

El Campo Memorial Hospital offers an accredited diabetes education program by the American Association of Diabetes Educators. This will allow residents in and around Wharton County increased access to critical diabetes education services.

Diabetes education is a collaborative process through which people with or at risk for diabetes gain the knowledge and skills needed to modify behavior and successfully self-manage the disease and its related conditions. It is provided by diabetes educators.

El Campo Memorial Hospital, located at 303 Sandy Corner Road, El Campo offers diabetes education classes at the hospital. Any questions about the class or the process to get registered can be directed to Rebecca Dluhos at the main hospital line 979-543-6251. Rebecca is available during the day from 9-3 Monday - Friday (please leave a message on voice mail if prompted).

The instructors went through a lengthy training program, instructed several actual patients during the training process and are now all diabetic educators.

AADE accredited programs must provide evidence that they meet or exceed the National Standards for Diabetes Self-Management Education. AADE's Accreditation Program requires the delivery of education content and also encourages behavior change, with the aim of improving the health status of people with diabetes.

American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) is now approved by The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to accredit Diabetes Self-Management Education/Training Programs. This program is eligible for reimbursement from CMS, private insurance and also available for self-pay.

Trends show that diabetes education is moving out of the hospital and into the community, so AADE's accreditation program was created, in part, to encourage diabetes education where the patients are seeking care.

Patients interested in taking this program will need to obtain orders from their physician. This is much like getting orders for therapy or for a diagnostic test. The physician will send the order to the DOTS coordinator, and once it has cleared through the business office, the patient will be contacted by one of the nurses to set up their individual assessment. Group classes will be scheduled at that time. One good thing about this program is that several area hospitals have also been accredited. If a student misses a session, they have the opportunity to make it up at one of the other accredited hospital.
